Hernia Repair Surgery
What is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when inner layers of abdominal muscle become weakened, allowing tissue to pouch outward. Hernias commonly occur in:
- The groin
- Upper thigh
- Navel (umbilicus)
- Midline
- Through previous incision sites (incisional hernia)
- Recurrent hernias
Surgical Approaches
Dr Mastakov performs both laparoscopic and open surgical approaches for hernia repair, depending on the type and location of the hernia and individual patient factors.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair
Uses minimally invasive techniques with smaller incisions, potentially offering:
- Smaller scars
- Reduced post-operative pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Quicker recovery
Open Hernia Repair
May be recommended in certain situations where open surgery is more appropriate for the specific hernia type.
Types of Hernia Repair
Dr Mastakov performs repair for:
- Inguinal hernias
- Femoral hernias
- Umbilical/navel hernias
- Ventral and incisional hernias
- Recurrent hernias
- Hiatus hernias
Hiatus Hernia
A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves into the chest through the diaphragm. Assessment and appropriate repair may be recommended when this contributes to symptoms or complications.
Repair of a hiatus hernia at the time of bariatric surgery may reduce the need for a separate procedure and help restore normal anatomy.
