Weight Loss Surgery
Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass
Understanding Weight and Obesity
Obesity is a health condition associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, asthma, some cancers and gout. It can be influenced by genetics, diet, physical activity, metabolism and psychological factors.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For adults:
- 18.5 β 25: Healthy weight
- 25 β 30: Overweight
- Over 30: Obese
- Over 40: Morbidly obese
Treatment Approach
Lifestyle measures such as healthy eating and exercise are usually the first approach to improving weight and health. For some patients with higher BMI and where other treatments have not achieved suitable results, bariatric surgery may be considered.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is a laparoscopic procedure that changes the stomach from a sac shape into a long, narrow gastric tube. This reduces stomach capacity and can help patients feel full sooner.
Important: Regular exercise and healthy food choices remain important after surgery.
About the Procedure
- Performed laparoscopically (minimally invasive)
- Removes approximately 75% of the stomach
- Maintains normal digestion pathway
- Can be performed with same-day gastroscopy if required
- May include hiatus hernia repair if identified
Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch and diverts food away from most of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine. The procedure changes food passage and nutrient absorption.
Important: Lifelong vitamin and mineral monitoring and supplementation are required after gastric bypass.
About the Procedure
- Creates a small stomach pouch (15-30ml)
- Diverts food bypass most of the stomach and small intestine
- Reduces both calorie intake and nutrient absorption
- Can provide significant weight loss
- Requires ongoing nutritional monitoring
Hiatus Hernia Repair
A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves into the chest through the diaphragm. If a hiatus hernia is found during sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, repairing it during the same procedure may reduce the need for another surgery and may help restore anatomy.
